This letter is to express my interest (not even strong!!!!) in applying for
the Assistant Professor of XX position at your university. I believe that
my strong academic background, and proven teaching records, prepares me to
be a qualified candidate for the position.
This sounds familiar??? Sounds personal statement for grad school copied
from the internet.....
And the letter went on and on to say how great he/she is without mentioning:
1. Why do you apply for OUR HUMBLE UNIVERSITY?
2. Why do you think you are a good fit for OUR HUMBLE DEPARTMENT?
3. What can you contribute to OUR GROWING COMMUNITY and OUR students, other
faculty?
It is apparently from a template. I saw quite often from Chinese candidates. |

己嘴不说，searching committee买不买账不是靠cover letter这几句话决定的。把
cover letter有限的字数集中在总结自己的背景和未来的研究更实在一些吧。

果想有东西,也是第二段开始。
我只扫一眼, 看看这人是不是把我们职位写对了。写错的真有, 刚给一位回信, 告诉对
方我们这不招信里说的职位。

再说这个letter的作用就那么回事儿吧,主要还是看CV
除非恰好同一个方向，否则很难通过几句话判断一个人的研究是不是真的promising

Probably spinozafun is expecting someone should mention something like this:
I admire spinozafun' research very much, and I cannot wait for a chance to
suck his/her toe...
Pratically, cover letters are boilerplates, if you mention too much, saying
you can teach a lot of courses, or you can collaborate with blabla. maybe it
is not exactly what they want. therefore, be general might be better. After
all, your edcational backgrounds and research experience are different,
anyway.
