I have an American PhD student who is at the end of his second year. Here is
my impression of him:
1) He can’t follow through in his project. He doesn’t seem to have the
ability to finish anything. I feel he has a pretty easy project that he can
finish. If I put a postdoc on it, it could probably be done in two weeks.
His progress is excruciatingly slow. He always has a hard time with
deadlines.
2) He doesn’t work very hard. He is often sick and doesn’t show up at
the lab. It is as often as one day in every two weeks. When he comes in, he
only stays in the lab from 10 to 5.
3) He is interested in talking about Science (or dreaming), but he seems
ill-equipped actually to do science. I feel he may not be smart enough for
this interdisciplinary field to get things done.
4) He has a good personality and gets along with every one.
5) Communication with me is NOT good. Our weekly meetings are brief and I
feel he is just going through the motions and wants to get out of the
meeting as soon as possible. He doesn’t ask me too many questions about his
work either.
I don’t know if it is worthwhile to keep him or I should just let him go.
Shall I give him another chance, e.g., this summer or another semester to
change his behavior? But people change VERY slowly, if at all, unless
something drastic happens. Shall I give him an ultimatum? But he seems like
a nervous guy. Would giving him more pressure be good? Letting him go would
be a tough decision emotionally, yet it might just be good riddance. I would
appreciate any comments and suggestions.

Just let him go. Obviously he is not a good fit for the PhD program, but he
has some other talents. For his sake, he should not waste his best few years
in this way.

和他好好谈谈, 从他的角度(劝他别浪费时间), 从你的角度(没有"足够"的经费,实验进
度太慢...). 没效果, 就让他走吧.

Thanks guys!
Looking at things from his perspective seems like a good idea. I have to
admit I don't understand what he is thinking. Well, may he doesn't
understand himself either. Anyway, I will have a good talk with him today or
tomorrow.
