not waste
time...中文直译为你不需要在XXX上浪费时间了（有点拗口），其实就是别在XXX上浪
费时间了。
而don't need和need not从习惯上来说，有2个区别：
1）don't need+sth. need not+to do. 这是肯定的。因为你不会说i need not bread.
2)在necessity and obligation程度上的不同。

第一句对是因为NEED是一个动词，所以可以说 you don't need to xxx.
作为x词（我忘了叫什么了），和MUST一样，后面不能接TO。你只能说you must not
xxx. you must not to xxx 或者 you must to not 的语法不对。

what is your opinion about how to translate the first sentence above?

其实你的第一句话you don't need to work是"你不需要工作 ”。you need not work
也是"你不需要工作 ”的意思。（you need not to work这句话语法不对）。
而 you need to not work是你需要不工作的意思。如果是我的话，我会说 "you need
to stop working". 这句话更make sense。
you don't need to work 和 you need to not work 中的NEED是动词。
you need not work的NEED不是动词。
