除非你要强调not的时候,用can *not* (italics)

: ...and its importance can not be overemphasized...
: -------

reference
Kenneth G. Wilson (1923–). The Columbia Guide to Standard American English
. 1993.

The negative of the auxiliary can, cannot occurs less frequently than the
contraction can’t but much more frequently than can not, which is sometimes
used for emphasis and to reflect the fact that this locution may be
stressed on the not as well as on the can. Cannot is Formal, can’t
relatively Informal in writing, and can’t is the more frequent in
Conversational contexts, but it is often appropriate

Yes, in the sentence you showed, you probably want to write "cannot"
Here is an example that shows the difference:
"I can not go to the party, if you don't want me to go."
(Most will say "I will not go to the party, if you don't want me to go.")
"I cannot go to the party, even if you want me to go."
(I am unable to go to the party.)
