O******e 发帖数: 734 | 4 Where do you fall in the order of this students he has taught?
I was hoping to avoid the word "order"; maybe "number" will also work.
I was also hoping to shorten the question, but asking "Where do you
fall among the students...?" means "How to do you rank in terms of
academic performance among the students...?"
I think there should be a better and shorter way to ask this.

O******e 发帖数: 734 | 16 Your (1) doesn't have anything to do with admission time.
I read it and I see a scene where a professor lines up all his students
in a row (maybe from shortest to tallest) and starts to count them.
People don't normally say "position in time" in English (except maybe when
discussing relativity in physics).

b****t 发帖数: 144 | 17 ok, maybe the previous 'how many' sentence serves best.
how many students had been under his advisement before you chose him as your
advisor?
how many students had been under his advisement before he was appointed to
your advisor?
how many of students had selected him as their advisor before you did?
