means that this professor is a permanently appointed faculty member
in one (or more) departments, and temporarily cross-appointed as a
member of the faculty in the by-courtesy department because of
research or teaching collaborations. A by-courtesy professor does
not have administrative duties and voting rights in the by-courtesy
department.
