"how to think" would be ok too, but not "what they think"
"what about a story" has no verb.
if use "both of", usually the next word would be "the".
just like u can say "all participants" or "all of the participants"
A is 倒装句式。 if pick D, not only the meaning would be incorrect, but
is missing a 介词 (such as "from") even if the meaning doesn't matter.

"both of the parents" means only one couple :-)
the second clause is a emphasising form of the following :
"and all other vertebrates evoled from them"
"from" cannot be omitted in any case yah :-)
so, only A could be possible ..
