Born in 1939 in Ottawa, Atwood began writing comic books and novels at
the age of 5. Three years later she suddenly stopped -- perhaps, she
suggests, because her older brother, who also wrote, stopped -- but
started again when she was 16. Her first professional short story was
published in Alphabet on November 8, 1964. Six years before, while an
undergraduate, a very short story called "The Glass Slippers" had
