The CUNY-New York State Initiative on Emergent Bilinguals (CUNY-NYSIEB), a
project of the Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society
(RISLUS) and the Ph.D. Program in Urban Education at the CUNY Graduate
Center, is looking for a Lead Writer to help create Common Core Bilingual
Standards for New York State, by aligning the Native Language Arts (NLA) and
English as a Second Language (ESL) Standards with the Common Core. We are
seeking a Lead Writer knowledgeable about the education of emergent
bilinguals and the Common Core Standards to begin work in April 2012.
The Principal Investigator (PI) of the NYSIEB project is Professor Ricardo
Otheguy. The Co-PIs are Professor Ofelia García and Professor Kate Menken.
The major goals of this initiative are (1) to develop the intellectual and
leadership capacities of principals of schools that serve large numbers of
emergent bilinguals in New York State, (2) to document successful practices
for emergent bilinguals occurring state-wide, (3) to provide tools for
teachers who work with emergent bilingual students, and (4) to align the
current NLA and ESL standards with the Common Core standards.
Primary Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Coordinator of New York State Standards
Alignment, the primary duties of the lead writer of NLA and ESL Bilingual
Standards will be to:
. Complete the writing of the NLA and ESL components of the new
Bilingual New York State Standards that are aligned with the Common Core
Standards.
. Supervise a writing team of 10-12 writers, formed in conjunction
with the New York State Education Department, who will write drafts of
various components of the Bilingual standards mostly through on-site weekend
writing sessions.
. Participate in various meetings with state and national experts
related to the standards writing process.
. Incorporate feedback from both national and local experts who will
provide an advisory role to the alignment process.
. Maintain constant communication with the Coordinator of New York
State Standards Alignment and New York State Education Department staff to
ensure the creation of a cohesive final product.
. Present drafts of the standards to the Coordinator of New York State
Standards Alignment and key stakeholders for feedback throughout the
writing process.
. Ensure that the writing of the standards follow the schedule as per
our agreement with the New York State Education Department.
. Edit the final draft of the Bilingual Common Core Standards prior to
submission.
. Prepare the final draft of the Bilingual Common Core Standards for
submission to the New York State Board of Regents in collaboration with the
Coordinator of New York Standards Alignment and New York State Education
Department staff.
Qualifications
. A detail-oriented individual who is able to work independently and
meet set deadlines.
. A master's in Bilingual Education or another relevant field required
. A doctorate in a relevant field preferred.
. Experience with standards and curriculum writing is preferred.
. Knowledge of public education in New York State is preferred.
. It is required that the Lead Writer be available to work full-time,
including weekends, from April through June 30, 2012.
Hours and Compensation
This is a temporary full-time position to begin in April and end June 30th
with possible project continuation pending funding and satisfactory
performance. Salary for work completed through June 2012 is $45,000.
