最近和系里一个大几界中国人谈了谈,他说建议我搞计量,或者起码是empirical的(
这里
他没有特别说清楚是empirical的微观还是宏观研究)。他说我们系之前大部分中国人
都做
econometrics,因为如果搞宏观,里面有computation和calibration,都要自己编程,
很难
的,导致我们系以前搞宏观的很多都7年才毕业。
所以他建议我搞计量。说以后去industry机会挺多的。说我们系以前中国人很多去
industry搞data analysis也挺好的,毕业的挺快,现在生活也挺安逸。他说industry

作的.但econometrics对编程能力要求高些.sas还是最主要的工具.stata去business用
处不大.C++很多单位也有要求.如果要自己写算法,matlab和fortran也要搞搞.fed/imf/
wb都不是容易进的.那些都还是要研究型的.如果你不准备搞研究,那几个地方基本是没
戏的.但一些州的公务员也要搞数据分析的.另外,不管搞宏观还是微观,对计量的要求都

,把stata,sas,gauss,matlab都学学,再做点project,比如用些health economics,
finance的数据,以后去industry or non-profit research institutes or smaller
colleges都有用。

是,不要念phd,1年半或2年后拿到硕士走人,越快越好。同届的有phd读完的,一般要5
年,也有7年才拿下的,但没有任何人能在美国拿到faculty offer,基本上如果不是top
10 program和几片像样的paper,tenure track肯定没戏,何苦去teaching school,钱少
还不能做研究。如果总归要去industry,你现在要做的事是花时间搞sas,别的都不用
看。进入industry,phd和master的工资在3-5年后没任何区别,只跟工作经验背景和领
域相关。
总之是那句话,不要贪图那个phd tittle的虚荣,不会跟你带来任何收益。早赚钱早办
绿卡。如果真想走学术,你得转学到top program. |

stata的数据时读到内存的,一般情况下,32位的windows系统能分配个3G的内存就到极
限了。
还有就是很多小软件不稳定,处理大数据的时候软件容易崩溃。
我觉得sas。做统计或者计量的话,用c或者fortran有点舍近求远了。
我有段时间在交易所做东西,就用一般的机器和sas,处理几年的数据,没问题。
每天的交易数据,至少都是千万个观测值以上。3000万到4000万也很常见,没觉得有什
么不能处理的。

server, oracle,db2,这个称之为infrastructure.具体到公司的不同业务,分析工具
就五花八门了,但还是sas最popular,主要是它强大的stats功能和BI support.现在SQL
server和oracle也开始在BI上面下大功夫了。一些偏门比如spss,stata主要是专业
stats小公司在用,但我相信它们的infrastructure还是以standard database system为
主。

e矩阵差不多是16000*16000。 但实际情况, 能产生的矩阵比这个要小点。所以一

But R is slower than Gauss and Matlab. In addition, I really don't like the
unconstraint optimization procedure in R. It is like a black box. Gauss'
maxlik module, showing the intermediate results, is the best. It will let
you know if it goes wrong in the procedure. In my opinion, the advantage of
R is it is free.

Since I have been irriated by SAS for quite some time, I would like to
provide a lit bitter comments below.
recently, converted from matlab to R.
SAS is a super-ugly language and is keeping losing important new users (e.g.
, new PhDs in statistics).
i spent many many nights and coded up hundreds of sas macros trying to make
it run like R/matlab (functional programming). Though dramatic improvement,
still not there yet. The bottom line is that SAS macro is not designed

and many others
and I use both R and SAS in my work
I found SAS makes my empirical work using routine Stat methodologies easier.
