World of Criminal Justice on Randy Steven Kraft
Nicknamed "The Scorecard Killer," Randy Steven Kraft prowled the nation's
highways from 1971 to 1983. Kraft was a soft-spoken computer consultant who
traveled frequently on business. On highways, the sexual predator picked up
young male hitch-hikers, including several U.S. Marines. Doping his
passengers with Valium and liquor, he raped, tortured, and killed them,
often in his car, before dumping their bodies by roadsides. In 1989, an
Orange County, California, jury convicted Kraft of sixteen murders, but
authorities believed that the real total was many times higher. Their
estimate was based on a bizarre list. Written in a code that Kraft never
divulged, prosecutors alleged that it was a scorecard, a personal log of
dozens of sexual murders.
Quite by accident, the California Highway Patrol made a hideous discovery in
May 1983. Noticing a vehicle weaving in traffic, officers stopped a Toyota
with two men it. The 38-year old driver, Kraft, failed a sobriety test and
was placed in the squad car while an officer went to speak to the passenger.
Found propped upright was the corpse of Terry Lee Gambrel, a 25-year old U.
S. Marine who had been missing since the day before after saying he was
going to hitch-hike to a party. Gambrel's neck and wrists bore ligature
marks that indicated he had been bound, and his pants were down. The car was
saturated with blood. Searches only increased suspicions of other grisley
acts. Under the floor mat of Kraft's car and in his house, detectives found
photographs--some sexually explicit--of men who had been murdered. They also
discovered clothing and personal articles belonging to the dead men.
After lengthy legal delays, Kraft went on trial for sixteen murders in 1989.
Tying together the crimes were common threads. The victims were males
between the ages of 18 and 25, six were Marines, and all had been
hitchhiking. Most had died from strangulation, many had ligature marks on
their wrists, and most had a combination of alcohol and prescription drugs
in their bloodstreams. Some were sexually mutilated.
In addition to the photos and other physical evidence, prosecutors built
their case partly on the strange list. They argued that its series of
cryptic entries was a record of his slayings, made up of physical details
and locations. "MC HB TATOO," for instance, allegedly referred to Robert
Wyatt Loggins, a 19-year old U.S. Marine slain in 1980; Loggins had several
tattoos, and his nude, strangled body was found in Huntington Beach,
California. "MARINE CARSON" was said to be Richard Keith, a 20-year-old
United States Marine last known to be hitchhiking in Carson, Los Angeles
County before his nude corpse turned up. Other codes eerily hinted at
multiple slayings, such as -2 IN 1 BEACH."
Unable to crack all the codes, prosecutors maintained that Kraft probably
killed 62 men, a number that would make him one of the top five serial
killers in the nation's history. He maintained his innocence but was
convicted and sentenced to death. In August of 2000, the California Supreme
Court rejected his appeal.
