upon login i got
"Connected to an idle instance."
after i tryped
"select sysdate from dual"
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
i checked the helpd document about this error code,
it says:
ORA-01034 ORACLE not available
Cause: Oracle was not started. Possible causes include the following:
The SGA requires more space than was allocated for it.

oracle is already started.
i'm using windows 2000 server, oracle 8i personal edition
what shall i do now?

Run "startup" in sqlplus.

ORACLE_SID
before you run svrmgr or sqlplus from command prompt.
If Oracle create the database for you then the sid should be
ORCL.
another possibility is as wangfsh pointed out, instance may
not started.
