neuro damage is involved, because something like this can easily be worse.
When I crashed a couple of years ago, the hardest part for me was putting my
wife through this. You probably have a lot of making up to do. My wife just
said "no riding for a month for both of you!"
anyway, we hope you get well soon. And we are thinking about you in North
Carolina. |

"no riding for a month for both of you" -- ouch, that hurts.
I was more shocked by how close I was to death rather than the trauma itself
, it's kinda awakening.
I have already recovered a lot in a week. My head has almost shrunk back to
its original size, my neck is get stronger by the day, and the lacerations
have healed up nicely. The whole ICU stay has made up for all the health
insurance I paid in the past.

I know how it felt since I've been through this a few years back. The death
isn't that fearful with this kind of near death experience. It's probably
the same to you now as well.
I've told myself I wouldn't race since then, though I started riding only a
week later. Wish you have a speedy recovery. |

Now thinking through the accident, I should have braked with both wheels and
shifted by crotch behind the seat, or simply ridden/bunny hopped over the
guy who went down.
In the future I will try to brake with my right hand, as well as the left,
so that in emergency I don't only brake with the front wheel. I will keep
racing in road races and TTs, but not crits |

Braking with both is definitely the way to go. but the improvement is going
to be limited. the traction in the rear is very little. and rear wheel is
much easier to lock up (from my own experience). then you will swing
sideways and go down sideways, which usually means collar bone and hip. not
as life threatening, but bad still. shifting weight is crucial though. we
should all practice a couple of times before

crashing with the 4/5s, instead of doing some real racing with people of
similar capabilities?
The problem with 4/5 crits is, there are too many people who are not very
smooth and technical, but they have the power and testosterone. Put these
guys in a race, granted someone will make a dumb move and cause a crash.

suffered erased all my memories of the accident. All I know is I woke up in
the ICU.
Now I think what a pity that I didn't have a chance to meet you when I was
in Davis couple of weeks ago. :)
