w******x 发帖数: 4396 | 2 if you plan to ride more than 20 miles on pavement, don't get a hybrid. get
a touring bike, a cyclocross or a proper road bike. |
f*******y 发帖数: 421 | 3 the 80 miles round-trip is an unpavement bike trail, hardtrail? not sure.
but anyway, will a road bike work there? Thanks. |
w******x 发帖数: 4396 | 4 80 miles offroad trips? i hope you have a good idea of what you are trying
to do here. offroad terrains vary wildly in their difficulty. 80 miles on (
even mild) mtb trails is more like 200 miles on road, while 80 miles on rail
trails could be like just 100 miles on pavement.
on one extreme you might want dual suspension to take the edge, while a
roadie with fatter tires will suffice on the other.
so what are you trying to do, really? have you have any experience riding
mtb?

w******x 发帖数: 4396 | 6 sounds like a rail trail.
no, a hybrid is not a road bike with fatter tire. it's designed for leisure
riding around the block. no good for riding anything longer than, say, an
hour, because of the geometry.
a touring bike or a cyclocross is much better for what you describe, but
most of them fall outside your price range. look at trek fx or raleigh
cadent instead.

road bike is a little challenging for me.may take some time to adapt to the

w******x 发帖数: 4396 | 9 the bottom line is bikes evolved into their respective forms to suit their
specific purposes. hybrids are simply not evolved to go fast nor go far.
hybrids generally sit upright, so you have a lot weight on your butt and
little on your hands. it's not aero either. over the course of 80 miles,
your rear end will sore, and you will tire out from having to fight the wind

front suspension on such a bike is a waste of money, time and energy (yours)

f*******y 发帖数: 421 | 15 went to local store again and according to a young clerk, no wider than 28 (
?) tires can be put on a roadbike like trek 1.1, while a cyclocross has much
larger range, so is good for both road and trail. I donot intend to high
speed racing, so looks like a cyclocross works better. one concern is that
my toe touch the wheel when I turn. is it normal for cyclocross? thanks. |

w******x 发帖数: 4396 | 17 if the tires are too narrow.
no, toe overlap is not common on cyclocross. it's usually only a problem on
29 inch mtbs. i think your bike shop friend had a mix up.
cyclocross is the most versatile bike around. i've used mine on road, mtb
trails and everything in between.

w******x 发帖数: 4396 | 22 no, that's not correct. either you got him wrong or he's confused himself.
in choosing a cyclocross the conventional wisdom says choose one size
smaller than your road bike size, because the smaller size makes the bike
easier to flip around on a cyclocross course (cyclocross is a category of
racing, btw), and it offers more standover clearance. but that's wisdom from
the days when road bike toptubes were much much higher than modern bikes.
regardless, since you don't plan on racing cyclocross yo

that cyclocross is larger than the same size road bike, thus, i should use

it is really a hard time to find a cyclocross/tourist with standover less
than 28 in. what is a double cross? i saw they labeled the cyclocross as tri

i build my own bikes. honestly it's not for the first timers as you need to
invest in tools (not cheap). if you plan to go this route i suggest you get
your bike shop to build it for you. there are places online selling build
kits as well. i can also advise you on the build. note of warning, it costs

w******x 发帖数: 4396 | 28 ok, here are some low budget options.
one, get the windsor tourist, smallest size. it's a good buy, problem is you
don't know how well it fits. standover might be too much.
two, get a mountain bike, swap out knobby tires for narrow slick tires, and
if the need arises, swap out the flat bar for something offering more hand
positions (e.g. http://harriscyclery.net/product/sunlite-north-road-handlebar-2765.htm). it takes more effort to go as fast as a road bike, but it's rugged and offer better sta |

w******x 发帖数: 4396 | 30 that's rather a niche market item and hard to find. you can look up redline
