*Hammonasset Beach State Park*
One of the best beaches in the area. Located in Madison, this is the largest
beach in Connecticut, and
it brings out sun worshippers in droves. The two-mile, white sandy beach is
perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and surf fishing.
*Harvey's Beach in Old Saybrook* is a smallish, well insulated beach with
fewer visitors. Great for an afternoon picnic or nap, Harvey's is the
perfect place to escape the crowds.
*Rocky Neck State Park*, near Niantic, has an excellent beach as well as a
vast salt marsh that shelters a variety of bird life, which can be viewed
from different points along the trails that meander through the park.
*Ocean Beach in New London* has a beautiful crescent shaped beach and offers
some of the best swimming in the region. The beach is flanked by a
boardwalk, which offers excellent jogging or strolling opportunities.”
*Lighthouse Point Park*
This 82 acre park on Long Island Sound in New Haven features year-round
events and exhibits on science and natural history, as well as swimming
areas, a bird sanctuary, and hiking trails. There is a parking fee, but
don’t let deter you from enjoying one of the best public beaches in
Connecticut. There are many charming bed and breakfasts in this area, which
are very popular during the summer months.
*Misquamicut State Beach*
Misquamicut State Beach is one the best Connecticut beaches （correction by
SandStone: it actually belongs to Rhode Island, though borders on
Connecticut's eastern border) because of its
seven miles of unspoiled sandy coastline. The water is extremely clean and
clear and does have a bit of surf undertow. This beach fills up quickly in
the summer months, but with parking for 3,000 cars, you won’t have to worry.
This is one of the best beaches in Connecticut for people with disabilities
as it features complete wheelchair access, warning signals for blind people,
and fire alarm signals for deaf people in the indoor areas. The beach is
only open on the weekends from May through Labor Day.
*Compo Beach and Marina*
Compo Beach and Marina can be found in Westport, CT and is the perfect
beach setting for those who love outdoor recreation. The beach is set upon
29 acres and is complete with a swimming area as well as a boat launch. Keep
in mind that the beach charges a small fee for non-residents of Westport,
but this is somewhat typical of Connecticut beaches. Playing a game of
basketball or baseball is popular with the locals at Compo Beach, as is
swimming in the mild waters. Young people particularly love this beach
because of its large skateboarding park.
