Bad-Thing undertone of the original question and the consequent "solution"
suggested by the kid was unacceptable entertainment material for airing.
Apology has to address our core concerns of racist bias and violent hate
speech, masquerading as "jokes".

2. Kimmel has to either a) be fired or b) has to wear a Panda t-shirt (with
"Chinese" prominently printed) on air for 60 days. Disney and ABC
employees each will receive a Panda T-shirt. They wear it on every Chinese
New Year and pose for a big Chinese New Year March and become honorary
Chinese-Americans. This way they could feel how it feels like to be
discriminated against, to be laughed at, to be envied, to be threatened, to
hear people laugh about killing their brothers and sisters in China.
Dishonorable acts while wearing your Chinese-American shirts, you will be
fired (this one is for Kimmel). Make
it a tradition, folks.
T-shirts used in San Francisco here: (the white ones have panda on it)

3. Disney has to agree to make all movies with a single version for the
Chinese market and the US market. Currently Disney makes a special version
of Iron Man Sequel
for the Chinese market and add Chinese characters/plotlines. This
practice is deceptive and lacks integrity. Disney, you need to know whether
the Chinese are your friends or not. If not, then get out of China. If
yes and diversity is truly important to you, positive Chinese/Asian
American role models should be viewed by ALL of your
markets, by none of your markets.
If Disney/ABC agrees to do all 3 things, I don't know about you, but I'd
agree to accept their apology.
18403 | 3 It's good PR move for us. Kimmel wears the same t-shirt on TV for 60 days.
With "Chinese" prominently printed and a couple of cute pandas.
It's basically a way to tell whether he's sincere or not. If he refuses to
wear a cute t-shirt for 60 days, then obviously he's not sincere in apology
. If he's willing to accept our t-shirt request, give us free positive
publicity, then we should let him off the hook and say forgive and forget.
化干戈为玉帛。
Our big target is not really Kimmel anyway. Our target is the media
network's callous disregard to the basic human rights and dignities of the
Chinese and the Chinese American. Our goal is to increase positive
representation of the Chinese/Chinese-American in the American media.
18403 | 5 I'd rather forgive than to hold a grudge forever. I personally
would give Kimmel a choice, but naturally I don't speak for others.
Everybody should have a criteria for "sincere apology". It may be a
different thing for different people. But a common minimal criteria is
useful to avoid an infinite loop. |
