Chicago - Hot, humid weather is expected to continue into August, prompting
officials to declare Monday an air pollution action day and issue an air
quality alert.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency determined an air pollution
action day will be declared Monday, and the National Weather Service has
issued an air quality alert for Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Grundy, Lake,
McHenry and Will counties.
An air pollution action day is declared when weather conditions are such
that widespread ozone and particulate levels are expected to be at or above
the unhealthy limit for sensitive groups -- including children and people
with pulmonary or respiratory diseases, according to the weather service’s
website.
Temperatures Monday are expected to reach 91 degrees with a heat index value
as high as 97, the weather service said. The extreme heat will continue
Tuesday, when the temperature will reach 92 and heat index values could be
as high as 102.
The weather service is predicting a 40 percent chance of storms Tuesday,
followed by a slight relief from the heat. The high on Wednesday and
Thursday are only expected to me in the low to mid 80s
