basic. If your kid doesn't know anything, then that's a starter.
Also dependent on how serious you are, you may find a local coach be very
helpful. It may cost more, but the kid learn much faster. The time your kid
spent on chess is also investment, isn't it?

my daughter is not good at math. I want to see if I can use chess to help
her logic skills.
Already put her in the class. As we are living in LA, it is easy to find
good Chinese teacher. Will see how it goes.

about it. Playing Chess after certain level is more about pattern
recognition. I remember some research on this topic: measuring brain
activities while solving chess puzzles to see which part of brain the chess
players are using.
There may be some correlation, but it does not mean it is causal. if parents
can push their kids to be good at chess, their kids probably are better at
math or logic.
well, for normal people, you need tons of hours to be good at anything. This
past summer, from two different sources, I heard they said kids need ten
thousand hours practice to become a national master. That is lot of hours
and that time can be used for other things your kid can be good at.

练也不用太长时间，国象有很成型的训练方法，成本并不高，见效很快，而且每天训练
时间也不用很长。至于收益，因人而异，觉得收益大有兴趣就坚持，如果觉得收益不大
也可以到一定时候就停止。兴趣是终生的，即使不是为了比赛，对棋的喜好也可以延续

11x11 board, each game wouldn't take too long.
But the thing with 国象 is that there are more kids he can play against and
more tournaments. last month, my son went to his first tournament, and every
kid join the tournament won a trophy. For a 5 year old, trophy is a BIG
deal.

发帖数: 26819 | 12 可能我不清楚，不过感觉围棋的入门速度可能要比象棋慢很多。9x9基本没啥定式可学，
完全是对杀。也就是说，从一开始学到能下一盘19x19的棋，围棋需要的时间比象棋长得
多，而后每练习一盘棋，时间成本也长很多。
英语的围棋教学资料可能远远不如国象的成熟和丰富。

In my case, all I am really trying to do is to direct my son's energy to a
right place. He is almost 6, almost no challenge from school work. I don't
want him to watch TV all day or thinking about play video game all the time.
Chess is a great choice.

发帖数: 6673 | 31 我娃有私人教练，学了一年多了。只是刚开始参加比赛，有点缺乏比赛经验。
见到近千的孩子在一个大厅里比赛，脸都有点发白，紧张了，所以第一场就输了。输了
也在情理之中，人家积分９００多，不过我认为我娃实际水平在８００－９００之间，
所以还是有机会的。
后来的比赛，遇到１１００的没有招架之力，遇到７００左右的，都能赢。
所以想找点好书，提高一下，明年争取更好成绩。
