About the Positions
Applications are invited for PhD and Postdoc positions on composite
materials and structures in the Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering at Imperial College London. You will be working on topics
related to polymers and polymer based composites, cementitious composites,
natural fibre/polymers composites, smart and functional nanocomposites, bio-
inspired composites, timber, and structural applications of these materials
such as strengthening of structures, structural health monitoring, 3D
printing, smart wearable devices etc. The research will be carried out
within the material section of the department, and the access to the
facilities across the college will be made available when necessary.
Candidates should have an IELTS score no less than 6.5, and GPA 85% min (A+)
. Those with research experiences in the above mentioned areas are strongly
encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to have a PhD degree in
engineering, science, or equivalent experiences. Basic understanding of
materials, mechanics and modelling is essential. The other requirements
include but not limited to the ability to communicate effectively via
presentations and written publications, well organised and ability to work
independently, ability to learn new skills and build relationships with new
people in an effective manner.
About the University
Imperial College London is the UK’s only university focused entirely on
science, engineering, medicine and business and we are consistently rated in
the top 10 universities in the world. You will find our main London campus
in South Kensington, with our hospital campuses located nearby in West and
North London. We also have Silwood Park in Berkshire and state-of-the-art
facilities in development at our major new campus in WhiteCity. We work in a
multidisciplinary and diverse community for education, research,
translation, and commercialisation, harnessing science and innovation to
tackle the big global challenges our complex world faces. It’s our mission
to achieve enduring excellence in all that we do for the benefit of society
– and we are looking for the most talented people to help us get there.
About the Department
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is the largest and
most highly rated civil engineering department in the UK. We aim to develop
the understanding, tools and people needed to create and maintain
sustainable natural and built environments, working on most of the major
challenges facing the world today, including resilience of communities to
natural and man-made extreme events, sustainable urbanization, providing
water for all, climate change mitigation/adaptation, diminishing natural
resources, renewable energy, low carbon economy and extending the life of
our infrastructure.
About the Facilities
The laboratories of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
provide state-of-the-art facilities and are amongst the most up-to-date and
best equipped in Europe.:
Our Structural Engineering lab has recently re-opened after a £10 million
refit, and is now one of the best in the world, able to undertake a wide
range of experimental work.
The Geotechnics lab is equipped with sophisticated purpose-designed
equipment for soil testing and analysis.
The Applied Hydrodynamics lab has wind-wave generators, flumes and tanks.
Our two Environmental Engineering labs can undertake high level pollution/
chemical analysis.
Our recently-established Intelligent Infrastructure and Transport lab is
fully equipped with monitoring, sensing and electronic prototyping equipment
that can support lab- and field-based studies on transport operations and
civil infrastructure.
The UKCRIC Advanced Infrastructure Materials Laboratory will be the
centrepiece of a new Imperial Centre for Infrastructure Materials where
researchers will develop a new generation of construction materials that are
more durable and robust, able to withstand ever heavier loads, and more
cost effective to manufacture and maintain.
In addition, the Department has outstanding computing and library facilities
. These complement the facilities provided by the College and provide a very
supportive environment for postgraduate study.
About the Application
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. An application
should include IELTS score no less than6.5, and GPA 85% min (A+), a latest
CV with a publication list, a cover letter, and the contact information (
including name, affiliation, phone number and email address) of at least two
references, and other supporting documents, in a single PDF file to
[email protected] Review of applications will begin immediately and
continue until the positions are filled.
