Location: Los Angeles, CA
Position Description
Develop, identify, and select materials and/or processes necessary to both
improve the performance of existing implantable sensor products and to also
create next generation sensor platforms. Qualified candidates will combine
comprehensive knowledge of organic and inorganic materials science along
with a detailed understanding of processing methodologies used within the
semiconductor processing industry to design and fabricate electrochemical
and optical sensors industry for a variety of medical device applications.
Will be responsible for providing technical leadership and engineering
support to the entire Research and Development organization in the area of
materials selection and process development/engineering.
Position Responsibilities
• Responsible for translating high level biosensor product concepts or
research requirements into highly specific designs that emphasize materials
selection and fabrication methodologies.
• Lead the development of novel manufacturing processes used to
fabricate implantable biosensors designed for long-term use.
• Integrate state of the art process control instrumentation into an
existing sensor manufacturing facility
• Troubleshoot and solve materials and process problems as they are
encountered in R&D and in Manufacturing
• Provide technical support in the area of chemosensitive materials
selection
• Assume engineering responsibility for a prototyping laboratory that
includes an array of thin and thick film processing capability
• Apply elemental analytical and materials characterization techniques
such as electron microscopy, AES, ESCA, and XPS in support of group and
business failure analysis projects.
• Apply knowledge of semiconductor materials to the development of
implantable electronics capable of functioning when exposed to various types
and levels of electromagnetic radiation.
• Enhance intellectual property position of the company through the
conception and filing of design and process patents.
• Provide process engineering technical interface necessary to support
a number of corporate collaborative initiatives
Basic Qualifications
• Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering,
Chemistry, Material Science or related field and 3+ years of work experience
with medical devices OR PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering
, Chemistry, Material Science or related field and no work experience.
• Broad understanding of materials science including polymers,
semiconductors, ceramics, or metals
• Broad understanding of materials processing technologies
• Ability to write technical summaries and articles for internal and
external publication
• Ability to present information to top management (presentation
skills)
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and
technical journals
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
• Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering,
Chemistry, Material Science or related field and 5+ years of work experience
with medical devices OR PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering
, Chemistry, Material Science or related field and 3+ years of work
experience with medical devices.
• Knowledge of plasma polymer deposition and biocompatibility of
materials is a preferred.
• Working understanding of vacuum deposition equipment desired.
