Phones’ screens make them too small to really replace tablets, while
tablets are too big to make reasonable phones. Samsung and LG may soon have
an easy answer: a pocketable phone that unfolds to become a tablet.

These companies and others have been working on the technology necessary for
a flexible screen for several years, and their efforts are apparently
nearing fruition: an unconfirmed report originating in Korea indicates that
smartphones with foldable displays could be on the market in the July-Sept.
quarter.
Samsung showed off a concept device back in 2014, giving the world an
indication what the future product might look like: a standard display on
the outside will function as a phone, but opening a clamshell will reveal an
inner screen that’s twice as large.
This company is supposedly going to introduce an Android-powered smartphone
with a foldable display under its own brand, while LG will to offer its
flexible screens to other phone/tablet makers.
There’s no word on the pricing for these devices, or what regions of the
world they will be available in. Samsung typically introduces cutting-edge
models like this first in Korea to see how they perform before deciding on a
broader release. |
