标 题: 公司还是学校：博士就业杂想

有一种传统观点认为各专业的博士毕业以后，多数都是应该去学校教书、或去pure
research labs的。这种观点在一定历史条件下当然有它的道理。但是架不住几十年下来
博士就业市场的供需关系越来越失衡，每年从学校里毕业出来的博士越来越多，而学校、
research labs的职位增加没那么快。于是物理、化学、生物之类在工业界没那么多机会
的专业，博士们做博士后的年限只得越来越长；而对计算机之类专业来说，工业界不仅机
会比其他专业多得多，钱也相对较多，而且没有研究型大学头几年的tenure压力，加上做
的是现实世界用得上的产品，和学校里那种空中楼阁式的研究比起来另一有种满足和成就
感，所以对这些专业来说，许多人宁愿进工业界不愿进学术界也是正常的。
当然也有不少朋友先试了试申请学校，没能成功，才转向工业界。这些朋友要说真对学校
生活有多浓厚的感情， | r*****y

but I feel the golden age for industry research has gone, like the previous
Bell Lab, IBM Research etc. Unless new breakthrough in application (e.g.
internet) come out, I don't think it will be back soon. Actually, CS is quite
developed in most of its branches. DotCom bubble will not be back either.
Staying in
universities and doing some research is a safe and predictable road for PhD.
if don't want just to be a developer/programmer/engineer.

their 5,6 years at universities. Obviously a lot of research universities
hire more and more assistant professors to let them compete with each other.

发帖数: 507 | 5 the thing is that even if you fail tenure, you have no problem to go back to
industry to find decent jobs. But for most of industry engineers (even with
PhD), there is no way for them to turn back.
I think the funding is the biggest obstacle new assistant professors have to
face, because funding cut is horrible these days. Competition between
collegues is not so terrible.
