server: JBOSS+ORACLE 10g+APACHE,
OS: WINDOW 2003 SERVER,
Hardware:????
The machine mainly is for LAN use, about 80 employees will use this system,
and about 100 users out of LAN. what kind of mahcine i can use? and how much
would it cost?
The Jboss may use multiple instances for the purpose of load balance and
backup.

之后还没有能力解决这种我们不屑解决的问题，是不是我们学东西什么地方出了毛病？
实际上这个问题并不容易，需要有Oracle管理员的经验才说得上来。我无力回答，不过我
确信你肯定需要很好的硬盘，SCSI disk array,因为你要支持100多个用户的查询。然后
就是主板，CPU, 内存，因为你没有限制，就买好一些的就是了，买个多CPU的，几G内存
的，应该差不多了，因为对数据库来说最重要的还是硬盘。其他的硬件就无所谓了。对了
，网卡肯定要好的了：）

务器一定要买个比较牛X的RAID CONTROLLER，再多装些1W转的硬盘作RAID10或者RAID15来

How much data in your case? Can you introduce JBOSS a little bit? I guess that
is an oltp kind of application(such as, online shopping), isn't it? What will
be the potential bottleneck in your application?. I guess that is CPU and/or
memory, and not i/o, am I right? What kind of data protection schemes you
want? Such as, a hardware RAID, or letting oracle 10g to provide reliablity?
How about your backup plan? Do you want a SAN or NAS or ditrect attached

or Weblogic from BEA.but the JBOSS is open source with better tech support.
The application is a work flow tracking system for small business used in LAN
internally, however, this will allow about 100 users or more to login out our
system, upload files from anywhere out of our LAN system.In addition, the

Since you have 200 clients, it seems your software may cost more than the
hardware.
Besides, Oracle charges you on the number of CPUs.
You need enough memory to cache data. Get as much memory as possible. How much

I suggest not to buy Dell. It's cheap but dirty. It's not reliable.

8TB data), then you may use a database server with a direct-attached RAID
system. If latency is not your concern, you even can buy a low cost RAID
system, such as a SATA array.
For application servers that hold business logics, I think that hyper-thread
CPU will help you, and also SMP is also good for your application. However,
you know your requirement better. Maybe some SMPs(such as, an expensive 16-way

idea.

I think buying one powerful computer(server) as the server and run four
server softwares on it is ok.

You know, managing(deploying/configuring/tuning
/upgrading) a machines is simpler than that for several machines. And
a cluster of computers involves some complicated fault-tolerance and
load balance things.
Yes, for HA, you can buy two, active/passive model is simple and may be easier
to manage.
For RAID, you can buy an external RAID, which will also make your life simpler.

have.
Oracle may cost you more than your hardwae. If you want to save on software,
use DB2. 1/2 to 1/3 price of Oracle.
