more like a top five CS program.

math. To apply for a security/applied cryptography PhD program next fall,
does anybody have some good universities outside top 20 to recommend? I am
particularly interested in cryptography with the understanding that probably I

have fewer fundings than security application professors.

he has left. You are right that jajodia and sandu are bulls. I know one of
jajodia's former PhD student has become a faculty at NCSU. Only thing about
GMU is their security program is at IT department instead of CS department.
Kind of not very common practice.
Thank you all for the help. Any other universities to recommend beyond
UCDavis, GMU, and FSU? I think I need at least five or six.

always 5th or 6th, and I believe GATECH is top 20th, and UNC and PURDUE are at
least top 30th. UCSD is also pretty good. But for a specific area, such as
security, maybe you need ask others about difficulty to get an offer. For
example, I believe GMU is competitive.
BTW, PSU is not too far from GMU. Thus if you want to go to GMU, why not PSU?

NorthEast region.
I am interested in applied cryptography, however, lack of strong mathmatical
background to work on cryptography now, but very keen on cryptography. So the
plan is get into applied cryptography area, and take number theory, abstract
algebra, and geometry courses to be ready for cryptography.
Currently I am working on threshold cryptography and elliptic curve
cryptography. Hopefully I did not make it clear.
