Now I have these things:
Laptop(1.8G, 512M,40G), bunch of softwares (flash5, dreamweaver4, frontpage,
fireworks, photoshop6, etc), some instrutive books ( how to use
flash5/dreamweaver/photoshop, etc)
But... How am I supposed to get started? I kinda lack of the general idea
1 Should I first find a space for myself online? Where do I get one? I am
going to need something that could be surfed from mainland for I am building
this site for my family

for building webpage or something like that... check your
libraries... you probably don't need flash, fireworks, photoshop
now. frontpage is too bad that no one should use it... hohoho...
dreamweaver probably is too complicated for beginner also.
you could get other easier to use software... many are shareware
or even free.

For practice, you don't have to find a space online. Try make some and browse
them locally on your PC. If you want your family to browse them, oh, yes, you
need a space online. And I suggest you find one in China. (use search engine,
you may find some.)
yes, after you finish one, -> upload it -> test it.
for example: make one page named "index.html" (index.html is often a default
page of webserver).
try type http://yourURL/path/index.html
and feel the load speed.
