In the past 15 years. I have only played bridge with robot. So in this
series,
I'll just introduce hands against robot. You are always sitting south with
the strongest
hand at the table. The bidding system is BBO2/1
Hand 1. none
You have S 97642 H A6, D AK8 C AT7
It goes pass, pass, ?
At the third seat, although this hand is rich of controls and may have a lot
of potential
if partner has a shapely hand with spade support, it is still a clear cut to
open 1NT because the spade suit is generally weak and you definitely don't
mind to pretend that
it is a four card suit.
Then it goes
pass pass 1NT 2C (one suiter)
x(stayman) pass 2S p
2NT pass ?
This one is interesting, although some may try to bid 3S and hope that
partner may hold
magical S AKx Hxxxx D Qxxxx Cx, so that you have an excellent play in 4s.
However, most likely, he may not have a magical hand like this. Should you
bid 3NT? No, although this
hand is rich of controls, it has quite a few flaws, weak S, likely problem
in H. A
hand with rich controls is only powerful when partner has fits in trump
contracts or
when he has a good long suit and offer you 9 easy tricks. However, under
this sequence,
the chances are slim to hit for the magical hand. Although, the overcaller
has at least
a six card suit and the distribution may not be very good. Therefore, it is
an easy
pass.
Next, you see this dummy:
N: SQ H8742 D J94 C KQ864
S: 97642 H A6, D AK8 C AT7
The opening lead is HK, you play H2 and east drops HT. Your move?
You have 1H, 2D, potentially 8 clubs if clubs break well. The overcaller is
likely
to hold HKQJ953 and some side suit honors. Therefore, you just take HA and
cash CA, hoping that your clubs may break well. Alas, you see your LHO
pitches a S3. Now what?
Now you have only six tricks.Your LHO is likely to hold 4-6-3-0 or 3-6-4-0
shape.
Anyway, it doesn't hurt to play a small spade because there could be
potential mistakes
or endplays in H/S and D against LHO.
Then LHO plays S8, dummy SQ and RHO wins with SK, then RHO plays SA, you are
happy to see that ST from LHO is dropped, you pitch H4 from dummy. Next,
RHO and shifted five of diamonds. What do you do now?
It is clearly that you should jump with DA because now you have a very good
chance to
make 2NT if RHO hold SJ. Therefore, you play DA and are happy to see RHO
holds SJ. Therefore, DQ should be held by LHO to justify his 2C overcall.
Now you have 2 S, 1H, 2D
and 3 Clubs. Exactly make this normal look 2NT.
This is a very normal hand I just played. However, how to bid it properly
and concentrate well in a hopeless contract is the key to the success in
bridge. The robot
is generally playing well although it should shift a diamond before cashing
SK.
It does make any send to
