school system.
What's a big deal living in a town rank 10+ versus a town rank 30+.
Does it increase your children's chance to get to ivy league school a lot?
I don't think so.
Of course, if you are afford, I totally agree that you can live in a top
town. Try to treat yourself anything nice if you are afford. Too much frugal
sometime is a sickness too.

比如这里面的Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS)，看似排名不高，不过你看
per student expenditure就可以看到Cambridge政府多么有钱，而且CRLS是传统的爬藤
预备校。只不过很多老中都盯着Boston Latin，这家却不怎么看重。

pretty much the same.
Thinking about this way,
如果你的小孩中等偏上，mostly likely he or she will do just the same no
matter what schools/towns they are in.
Plus, academic is just one criteria (less weighed one actually) for ivy
league admission.

Our rankings were computed by statistician George Recck, director of the
Math Resources Center at Babson College. We gathered the most recent
available data on area school districts by consulting school officials and
websites, as well as the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education. With this information, Recck calculated the mean scores
for each category, then ranked the districts based on a weighted average of
each school data point’s difference from the mean. Only schools serving
cities and towns within the Greater Boston I-495 boundary were included.

The best way I believe is to use college matriculation data to rank high
schools. of course, it is not perfect either but much better than the
dubious ranking
method by some faculty member who has tons of time in hand
and is not capable of doing real research work. |

俺统计基本还给老师了，
不说他最后Weight 的事情了， 他把Avg score 算mean, 这么 mean of means 等于隐
含的
认为每个学区的Sample 的size 是一样的。。。 这一步已经weight 了。

students of the school. usually the data is not widely available to people
outside of the school. most public schools in MA use NAVIANCE system where
you can find all sorts of info including matriculation data for each
graduation class if you have acount info (username/password) e.g. number of
student accepted and went to harvard. and usually one account for each
school so you can only see your affiliated school,not all the schools.
i am not sure if NAVIANCE would provide all data for free for research
purpose. maybe you can do a project at your spare time. :-)

so, i agree to the point above that let's cut the chase. admit% by any
college just doesn't carry the same weight (but it may to the other ranking
methods) as admit% by ivies...to most chinese, they only care about ivies
plus a few.
Case in point, above is the 2012 matriculation data NNHS vs NSHS. Enroll#
should be the key here because Admit# could be skewed given good students
could be accepted by several colleges. so 15 vs. 14. and NNHS is ranked 11
vs NSHS ranked 7. does it make sense to you?
I would rank the two in the same tier...however, different ranking methods
always yield different results...but really, who cares? |
