The injury-plagued James Levine era at the Boston Symphony Orchestra
continues.
Thursday evening, the maestro abruptly canceled his scheduled performance of
Mahler’s Ninth Symphony. BSO managing director Mark Volpe made a rare
onstage appearance before the production to announce Levine’s absence, due
to a setback from yet another back surgery — his third in three years.
Newly minted BSO assistant conductor Sean Newhouse filled in.
Levine has made major alterations to BSO programs in his seven-year tenure,
adding more demanding works such as Mahler’s Ninth, a concert-length piece
that challenges both listeners and orchestra members. But unfortunately he
has not always been healthy enough to see his ambitious initiatives through
to completion.
The spotty performance could not be blamed entirely on Newhouse’s last-
minute substitution. As associate conductor, he is normally Levine’s backup
, or cover. His familiarity with the score was obvious, his intentions
generally sound and, despite a slow start (and hitting his head on the
podium as he made his preconcert bow), he gave a sturdy, uneventful reading
to this vast and uncategorizable symphony.
The faults in the concert lay largely with the orchestra, which gave its
most off-handed performance in a long time. Entrances were casual and
pitches were sometimes strained. The horns and winds, normally resolute,
left some notes in Never Never Land. Concertmaster Malcolm Lowe, given
extended solo forays, was a lone consistent standout.
Most disturbing — bordering on the unprofessional — was what appeared to
be some inside joke running through the violin section. Backward glances,
grins and sniggering have no place in junior high classrooms, let alone
onstage during performance. With a young conductor leading a challenging
work, at least the appearance of engaged playing must be maintained.
The larger issue remains Levine’s regular and repeated absences. His
artistic choices demand the most from audiences and orchestra members alike,
but if he is not there to give them shape, where does the future of this
orchestra lie? |

发帖数: 584 | 3 两个月前听演出，就看见那位老先生柱着拐杖出来，坐着指挥，我还以为他腿有问题呢。
那次演出有点令人失望。因为除了最后一段，和其中一段，我都比较难整段听完而不分
神。

不知道3／12 那场mozart，他能不能恢复啊。
我跑一趟Boston也不容易！

至于马9这个完全是听的一头雾水，出来自责自己的欣赏水平不够 |

周六感觉挺凌乱的，虽然没有那新闻报道里的嘻嘻哈哈，还是配合的很不理想。尤其第
三乐章，小哥还在那边翻乐谱。。。
当然，自己的水平有限，对近现代的东西一直敬而远之，要不是听说是Levine，估计都
不会去。
俩礼拜之前去听了“Chin”的那个大提协奏，给我堵的，整个中场休息都在那懵着，倒
是我后面几个大妈站起来拼命的鼓掌＋欢呼，我也只能说她们境界很高。

以前在华盛顿的林肯剧院看了场很垃圾的音乐剧，就十几块，观众还都穿低胸晚装。唱的那个
叫难听。只不过乐队很高级。人家一开口唱，我就堵耳朵，伴奏一开始我就开耳朵。嘻

校园里挪出来就是这个风气， 阴阳怪气， 妖风横行， 更难听得我也说得出来， 这种
小儿科最后得结果就是性器官来性器官去， 还居然有人自鸣得意， 不过， 我还是自
封一周吧， 这样缺口德。
