Malden - A Watertown woman died Monday afternoon after she was struck by an
Orange Line train in Malden, according to the MBTA.
The 41-year-old woman's name has not yet been released. Transit police are s
till investigating.
The incident happened at the Malden Station on the southbound side of the tr
ain platform.
According to MBTA spokesperson Joe Pesaturo, the woman fell onto the tracks
after she was hit by the train. Authorities have not confirmed the reason b
ehind the incident.
"It is not considered suspicious," Pesaturo said.
Malden Deputy Fire Chief Philip Cargill said crews arrived around 1:30 p.m.
to find the station filled with crowds of commuters.
"It's a very busy train station around that time, so a lot of people saw it
[happen]," he said.
Firefighters worked to extricate the victim, who was caught under the train.
She was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital where she later died.
"It's a tough situation to work with," Cargill said. "We are trained to do t
hese things, but nobody likes to do it."
Orange Line service through the area was disrupted during the incident for m
ore than an hour, but is back on schedule, Pesaturo said. | Y******e
