Begun in 1897, the Boston Athletic Association Marathon is
held on Patriots' Day, a regional holiday that commemorates
the ride of Paul Revere and honors American independence.
But in 1900, the organizers of the BAA Marathon were worried
that their marathon would be dominated by foreign athletes.
At just under 19 1/4 miles, the Around-the-Bay Race in
Hamilton, Ontario, had inspired a number of young men to
train for long-distance running, and five of them came to
