influenza reverse-genetics, vaccine creation, and vaccine analysis in animal
models. Preference will be given to candidates that also have experience
with positive strand RNA viruses such as Coronaviruses or Rhinoviruses. The
candidates should also have a strong understanding of basic molecular
virology techniques, and/or viral evolutionary analysis.
No. 3 Staff Scientist
Job Responsibilities
JCVI seeking a Staff Scientist within our Infectious Disease Department. The
Staff Scientist will be responsible for participating in a wide variety of
laboratory-based activities related to molecular virology, molecular biology
, genomics, and microbiology. This position is located in our Rockville, MD
laboratory.
Responsibilities will include viral genomic amplification using various PCR
and RT-PCR techniques, sequence analysis, cloning, and development and/or
use of single reaction genomic amplification techniques that integrate with
the existing sequencing pipeline. The primary responsibility will be multi-
segment RT-PCR amplification of the influenza virus genome as part of the
influenza genome sequencing project. Experience with isolation of RNA,
quantitative RT-PCR using the TaqMan method, culturing bacterial cells,
culturing mammalian cells, virus isolation, virus propagation, and virus
titration are also important. State of the art robotic systems will be used
to carry out whole genome amplifications and sequencing from a variety of
specimens. The candidate will work in a supportive team environment and have
the opportunity to learn and advance genomic methods.
Qualifications
Successful candidates will have an MD or Ph.D. in Immunology, Virology or a
related field and at least five years of postdoctoral laboratory experience.
The candidate should have strong skills in designing experiments and
interpreting results. Candidates should have excellent troubleshooting
capabilities and good computer aptitude. Experience in virology and
molecular biology is required, and preference will be given to candidates
that have experience with influenza virus, coronaviruses, and retroviruses.
Prior experience with viruses that require BSL3 practices as well as the
techniques needed for the responsibilities of the position are also helpful.
No. 4 Post-Doctoral Fellow
Job Responsibilities
An NIH-funded Post-Doctoral Fellow position is immediately available in the
Viral Genomics/Infectious Disease group at the J. Craig Venter Institute,
Rockville, Maryland location. The successful applicant will be part of a
collaborative, interdisciplinary team of virologists and computer scientists
studying viral epidemiology and evolution. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be
responsible for analyzing genomic sequence data to look at evolutionary
trends of emerging viruses, including influenza. The ideal candidate will
develop new methods to analyze data and will have the opportunity to
contribute to a range of projects.
Qualifications
A PhD in evolutionary biology, population genetics or related discipline and
relevant experience in genome biology, phylogenetics or bioinformatics are
required. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong understanding
of viral evolution and experience working with next generation sequence
data. A strong publication record, communication and organizational skills,
writing ability, and English proficiency are required. The Post-Doctoral
Fellow will also be expected to present his/her research findings, to
publish such findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and to
participate in grant proposal preparation.
No. 5 Research Associate I/II, Molecular Biology
Job Responsibilities
JCVI is seeking a Research Associate I/II, Molecular Biology to join our
Viral Genomics group. The Research Associate will work in a team performing
full genome sequencing and analysis of various viruses, including influenza
viruses and coronaviruses, among others.
Responsibilities of the Research Associate will include, but are not limited
to:
?Carrying out routine Molecular Biology techniques related to viral genome
sequencing (RTPCR, PCR, gel electrophoresis analysis, gel purification of
DNA fragments, bacterial transformation, plasmid purification, restriction
digests, DNA sequencing).
?Troubleshooting laboratory experiments and analyzing sequencing data.
?Presenting results and conclusions at laboratory meetings.
?Managing laboratory activities including ordering and stocking supplies and
reagents.
Qualifications
Successful candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biology,
Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field. Experience in virology
and molecular biology and hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in an
independent project is preferred. Candidates must have good troubleshooting
capabilities, excellent organizational and time management skills, a high
level of initiative and the ability to work with minimum supervision, and
flexibility to handle a variety of tasks and shift priorities simultaneously
.
No. 6 Post-Doctoral Fellow
Job Responsibilities
