if i do population genetics and evolution study during my phd degree(but
still biomedical science program), and receive lots of training in
mathmatics, statistics and programming, will this be benefitial to switching
to areas like biostatistics, or find a job like data analyst(like
biostatistician)?
thanks! | d*****r 发帖数: 2583 | 2 yes.

little bit far away from biostatistics?
anyway, i think i really wanna learn mathmatics, learn some techniques which
I can use for survival here in America...

| u*********1 发帖数: 2518 | 6 what do you mean? do you mean this field is very boring?
about switching major, I don't have money, I don't have "shenfen", so this
is just my compromising way of survival, kind of study and accumulation for
future use. After all, I learned NO mathmatics in college as a pure biology
major. probably i need more time even to purely study mathmatics and
computation.

| s*****0 发帖数: 357 | 7 That definitely will boost your chance, but no guarantee because many other
factors are out of your hands.
Here is my own story:
1) PhD in Pop Genet major, and boss strongly encouraged me to take many CS
and statistics courses (uncertain factor: Nice boss);
2) Networking plus my CS co-major sent me to an Ivy medical school's postdoc
program. Productive in publications, and boss strongly supported GC
application. Boss also used his reputation and connection to help send me to
a biotech. However, the starting job is not biostatistics-related. (
uncertain factors: nice boss; boss's industrial connections);
3) Internal transfer to biostat group and started clinical trail work
because the company was in late stage of drug submission and in strong need
of hands to finalize the work. (uncertain factors: an emergent need from
biostat group; nice senior management recognizing my quant strength and
values)
As you can see, many factors were just coincidences. With either one missing
, probably story would have been changed. The take-home message is: do your
best to prepare, and once the opportunity emerges, don't lose it.
Best.

I'm still young and just wanna have more STUDY on mathmatics to better
prepare myself.
More, will people earn more in industry? Enough to buy a house here?
Actually I don't need to raise a child, so I don't need be that rich...But I still hope I can stay here, having a big house(instead of apartment) Also, I
just don't like the feeling of high-risk and hard body-work at traditional
biology lab.
