you should know some basic biology, like genetics, cell biology, molecular
biology. The difficult part is the vocabulary. You have to memorize many
terms at the beginning.
There is one book I feel pretty good for people with non-biology background.
The processes of life, by L Hunter. It is very concise but includes all
necessary information you need to know for modern biology.
