First, ion is translocated within the conducting duct as dehydrated form.
Theerefore the ion selectivity is actually determined by both protein and ion
properties.
The reaction can be simplified as (alkaline metal, for example; A stands for
the amino residue that binds to ion):
Li (H2O)n + A ---> LiA + nH2O
This reaction depends on:
1. dehydration energy of the hydrated ion, for which the order is: Li > Na > K
> Rb > Cs, determined mainly by the electric strength of naked ion. It is also
