but most of the data is not sufficient enough to build a fun, sexy
story, and without that, the paper is destined to be out of favor
by top-notch journals. So JBC paper is usually boring and people
publish only because they have some data they need to publish, and
the data looks real and good.
Any good data with combination of an interesting story will for sure
go into a higher-tier category such as EMBO and NCB.

JBS is a journal contain many good data as well as bad articles.
Whenever you have a journal contains so many materials each issue,
it happens.
As for whether JBC is better than biochemistry, overall it is, but
for specific cases it varies. Generally biochemistry takes more
biochem paper. For example, our lab published lots of stuff on JBC
for stories not invovling cell bio much. But the kinetics side always
go to biochem since kineticist actually it is better than JBC in
their area,
