Cross
What meaning and idea does the cross in the church convey?
Every time I stand by the altar, looking at the sign of the cross on
the background, I perceive an atmosphere of holiness and solemnity. The
cross tells the significant and holy act of Jesus Christ who died on the
cross, shed his blood to the last, in our place, in order to redeem humans’
sin and give eternal life to those believe in him----his death on the cross
for our salvation, and his resurrection three days later by our heavenly
Father God.
According to the laws of some ancient countries, those who sin should
die and suffer penalty in the most terrible and despicable way. Why should
Jesus Christ die like this, as he is holy, without any sin, while we human
beings are sinners? The whole matter is arranged by God, who purposely sent
his only son to us and let him die on the cross for
redemption of mankind from sin. How profound is God’s love for us-----his
children, his own creation.
The cross in early days of ancient church was a symbol of death,
suffering and humiliation, but now it is the foremost symbol of Christianity
. It is a symbol of God’s power over everything. The cross is the very
means by which you and I, as Christians, gain a new life here and now----and
the promise of eternal life in the future.
The spirit of the cross----denoting salvation act of humanity at any price,
even of self-sacrifice----is now being handed down from generation to
generation throughout the world.
NOTE: THIS ARTICLE IS WRITTEN IN COMMEMORATION OF EASTER DAY. It also
expresses my heart-felt thanks to God and Jesus for delivering me from my
sin and giving me a new life of Christianity. |
