Jeremy Lin has sparked a revival among Knicks fans, many of whom had begun
to write off the season as yet another losing effort. Knicks fans have been
clamoring for a dominant team for over a decade – the Knicks haven’t won
50 games or made it past the first round of the playoffs since Patrick Ewing
left in 2000 – and Lin has given them a reason to hope.
That hope has translated to increased ticket prices at Madison Square Garden
. The Knicks have capitalized on Linsanity, raising ticket prices an average
27% since Lin broke onto the scene with 25 points off the bench in a 99-92
win over the New Jersey Nets.
More interesting, however, is the effect that Lin is having on the rest of
the league. The Knicks will head to Toronto on Tuesday to face the Raptors,
who then play the San Antonio Spurs at home the very next night. Despite
their recent success, the Knicks are still only 13-15 and sit well behind
the Philadelphia 76ers for the Atlantic Division lead. The Spurs, on the
other hand, are a red hot 19-9 and are currently riding a seven game winning
streak.
But the Spurs’ success doesn’t begin to compare to Linsanity in terms of
demand for tickets. The Raptors have tickets listed for both games, and the
price difference is immense. The cheapest seat in the house for Spurs-
Raptors is a very affordable $12.50. That very same seat at the Knicks game
the night before? $44.
The Lin Effect is also apparent on the secondhand market. There are plenty
of balcony-level tickets available on StubHub for both games. To watch the
Knicks, fans will have to shell out at least $33, and balcony tickets are
priced as high as $92. For Wednesday’s Spurs game, those same balcony seats
are going for as little as $9 to $15.
These price differences reflect consumer demand to watch Lin’s recently
rejuvenated Knicks team, and they indicate that Linsanity is a league-wide
sensation. With Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire expected to return to
the lineup this week, those ticket prices will only soar higher.
