warranty吗？还是不买？
这车开得很少，到现在也才只有几千miles, 因为疫情。 |

warranty了，所以必须expire之前决定。
现在return to work, 很快就1年1万迈加上去了。
You can purchase a BMW extended warranty from either a dealership or an
independent warranty company. BMW extended warranty options from dealerships
can only be purchased before the end of your original factory warranty

但看论坛也许能发现。如果有的话，你找独立的shop查一下，有退化迹象就在保修期内
换掉。

bimmer也太那个了，连水泵都能有问题。我的acura开了10年都没东西需要修。

慢慢开回家。新的水泵已经4万英里了，祈祷不要再坏了。

大部分车的水泵都是机械驱动，跟alternator这些一样是belt driven，只要发动机在
转就行。

第二，水泵坏了，你不会不知道，警报灯会亮， 水温超标，你会知道。马上停下来就
不会烧发动机

would worth the cost of the warranty.
n54 and some older n52 made before 2011/2012 have the water pump problem.
Newer BMW does not have water pump problem. In recent years BMW is actually
switching back to a mechanical water pump. Many BMW enthusiasts want the
electric water pump. The electric water pump allows the engine and turbo to
be cooled when the engine is off and offer far better thermal management,
for example, the water pump is completely off when the engine is cold allow
much faster warmup. Most mechanical water pump push water from the front to
the back, leading to cylinder 6 to be much hotter than cylinder 1. The
external mounted electric water pump allows the coolant to pass
transversely through the engine block cooling all 6 cylinders in parallel.
compare to the BMW S65 rod bearing problem, N20 time chain guide problem,
engine head hose flange problem, the N54 water pump problem is not a big
deal. I know people push the engine to > 400 hp with the stock water pump.
In early days, when BMW asks pierburg to make the electric water pump,
BMW only specified a minimum life expectancy of 6,000 hours. No wonder some
early water pumps last around that much of time.
I recently replaced the water pump on my BMW after 100,000 miles as
preventive maintenance. I took the pump apart out of curiosity. The pump is
really a robust design. All o-rings are still in good shape. Coolant stays
where it suppose to be. There are sufficient redundancy to make sure the
pump is unlikely to fail catastrophically.
I think the BMW water pump concern is blew out of proportion. At least in my
case, I am
confident the original water pump could have lasted a few more years.

engine with different emission configurations.
Early n20 engines have a timing chain guide problem. There is not enough
data in the field to tell if the 2018 still have timing chain guide problem.
It typically happens near 100,000 miles. It is actually fairly easy to
check.
The timing chain is visible from the oil filler cap. You just take a pick
tool to make sure there is no slack in the timing chain. Otherwise, you need
to replace the timing chain guide asap.
Another problem common to many BMW is the plastic head flange that goes from
the engine head to the thermostat.
This is the radiator bypass loop. The plastic flange fails after roughly 10
years and cause a catastrophic coolant lose. It is designed obsolescence for
sure. There is an aftermarket aluminum part that last the life of the car.
It is an easy DIY to replace.
