Rear Shocks may have Poor Welds
If the lower loop of the rear shock absorber detaches, there may be a loss
of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2018
Volkswagen Tiguan long wheelbase (LWB) vehicles. A lower loop of a rear
shock absorber may separate from its base due to an incorrect welding
process
Remedy
Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear shock
absorbers, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall is
expected to begin June 25, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer
service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 42i7.

Issue: In affected vehicles, a lower loop of a rear shock absorber may
separate from its base due to an incorrect supplier welding process. If a
failure occurs, the lower loop of a rear shock absorber may detach from the
base cup and destabilize the vehicle, potentially resulting in a crash
without warning.
Repair:
REPAIR NOT YET AVAILABLE
When parts and repair instructions become available, dealers will inspect
and, if necessary, replace one or both rear shock absorbers.
Check daily campaign open inventory report or OMD for affected vehicles in
inventory
Precautions: If the recall condition is occurring, the driver may hear
noise coming from the rear of the vehicle while driving. If this happens,
the driver should stop the vehicle in a safe location as soon as possible
and contact a Volkswagen dealer to have the vehicle towed to the dealership
and inspected.
Parts Department: Parts information will be provided when recall repair
instructions are released.

New Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: It is a violation of Federal law for a
dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor
vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a
sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied. By law, dealers
must correct, prior to delivery for sale or lease, any vehicle that fails
to comply with an applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or that
contains a defect relating to motor vehicle safety.
Pre-Owned Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: Dealers should not deliver any pre-
owned vehicles in their inventory which are involved in a safety or
compliance recall until the defect has been remedied.
