DENVER – New results are in ranking midsized SUVs on their safety. Experts
with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested nine 2014 midsize
SUVs and only two are considered to be safe in crashes on the front driver’
s side.
In a collision at 40 mph, the Chevrolet Equinox, ranked as one of the safest
because of its tough structure, keeps the driver from hitting the inside of
the car.
But in the Honda Pilot, one of the SUVs ranked worst on the list, it makes
impact, but the parking brake pedal moves in along with the steering wheel,
which causes the head to slide right off the air bag.
This is exceptionally dangerous because the impact doesn’t hit in the front
-end crumple zone that’s there for protection. That makes it much more
likely to cause serious injury.
The only two midsize SUVs that stand up to this test and earn the highest
rating of good are the Chevrolet Equinox and the GMC Terrain.
How midsize SUVs rated in the small overlap front crash test ratings:
Good: Chevrolet Equinoz, GMC Terrain
Acceptable: Toyota Highlander
Marginal: Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota 4Runner, Ford Explorer
Poor: Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-9, Honda Pilot
