Toyota Motor Sales says it is conducting two separate recalls involving a
heat issue with some hybrids and an engine problem with some Lexus car
models. Both could cause the vehicles to quit running unexpectedly.
Approximately 133,000 model 2006 through 2010 Highlander hybrids and 2006-
2008 Lexus RX 400h hybrids can overheat certain transistors within the
hybrid system's inverter assembly. If that happens, Toyota says, various
warning lights on the instrument panel will illuminate, and in most cases
the vehicle will enter low-speed "limp home mode."
In limited instances, the hybrid system will shut down and the vehicle will
stop.
The other recall involves approximately 102,000 model 2006 through 2011
Lexus IS 350, IS 350C, and GS 350 vehicles.
Bolts that hold the variable valve timing control device could come lose,
causing the cars to stop.
Toyota says a possible early warning of the problem is abnormal noise just
after start-up. | T*U
