actually, in the small overlap test, the driver's head motion is always
biasing to the left because the car is pushed to the right. if you compare
the passat and the accord, you'll find that the accord has the better side
air curtain. it's much bigger and especially, it covers the a-pillar very
well and pops out at the right time so that the driver's head is pushed back
a little bit to hit the frontal airbag. in contrast, the passat's air
curtain is much smaller. even worse, it has a huge gap to the frontal airbag
that exposes the driver's head to the a-pillar. the air curtain pops out
very early, but unfortunately, it's too early, so it doesn't push the head
back like what happens in the accord. now, you see the result: where is the
driver's head going? slightly to the left (i.e. towards the a-pillar). where
're the airbags? anywhere except for the a-pillar. what do you expect then? |
