发帖数: 138 | 1 My own tips for maintaining a German car that I would like to share:
1. Use compatible engine oil. The only oil which meets the German formula I
can find from local store is Mobil 1 synthetic 0W-40.
2. It seems German are not good at making the rubber or plastic parts last
longer. So be prepared for oil and coolant leak after 75K miles if you don't
replace the valve cover gasket, camshaft seals, thermostat o-ring, coolant
temperature sensor o-ring, etc.
3. The VW/Audi cars can vary the valve timing depends on the gas type. The
timing is adjusted by one or two cam chain tensioner(s). The tensioner does
not last long. Be prepared to replaced it around 100K miles. |

I teared down the upper engine of my neighbor's 02 camry a month ago I found
all rubber parts hardened and seeping. |

The newer models have electric water pump. The engine will over heat when it
fails. When the dashboard gives out warnings about the coolant temperature
too high, stop the car immediately and check the water pump. If it is going
bad, replace it right away. Thus, it is a good idea to buy a spare water
pump and keep it in your trunk since the dealer will charge you more than $
1000 to replace it. |

那个塑料的 pump 可是很难换的，位置极刁，不知道有多少人能自己换？估计没两个，

发帖数: 138 | 8 I believe it is aluminum rather than plastic. To keep a pump in the trunk so
you can drive your car to a nearest shop for a quick replacement. When the
engine is overheating, the computer will put the car into limp mode which
allows you to drive at something like 5MPH.
Keep in mind, the part is usually not available from an indy shop. When that
fails and you are not prepared, be ready to spend a fortune to tow your car
to the dealership.
By the way, if you are not handy, better not to keep an out of warranty BMW.
