basic requirements:
1. good mpg for commuting to work (most local)
2. low price tag ($16k - $18k)
3. good safety rating from iihs (civic seems safer than Mazda 3)
did some research and seems civic and Mazda3 are better choices than prius (
$23k). Prius save gas, but does not save any money.

Same price or a little bit higher you can buy a mid-size American car. Try
to avoid this kind of compact cars because they are not safe.
