(BYD "is nothing if not over-ambitious – much like China itself. * * * BYD
is disappointing the market, yet again, with another profit warning: time
for a dose of realism all around. Late on Monday [Aug 21] BYD * * * warned
the Hong Kong market that net profit for the first three quarters of this
year may be down 85-95 per cent. Its shares have fallen 60 per cent so far
this year.")

Quote:
"Investors dumped BYD's Hong Kong-listed shares Tuesday following its
disclosure that its first-half profit fell nearly 90% from a year earlier to
275.36 million yuan ($43 million) * * * Its car sales [] account for nearly
hlaf of its revenue, fell 23% in the first half of hte year to 220,131 cars
.
"BYD's car sales have been slipping since last summer in part because of
competition from affirdable cars launched in China by foreign companies and
their local partners
My comment:
(a) WSJ quotes Sahnghai analyst Yale Zhang as saying that BYD invests in
electric car to differentiate itself but does not "have money left for
regular gasoline car developement."
(b) Indeed the left panel of the graphic shows BYD is cutting its overall R
& D compared with last year. The right panel showed decreasing sales, as
much as by a third, each month of this year compared with the same month a
year ago, based on data not from the company (probably BYD does not release
them) but from China Passenger Car Association.

(US car rental company Hertz will start later this week to rent out just two
e6 cars in each of China's 3 cities: Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. "Hertz
plans to have 25 to 30 electric cars available for rent by the end of this
year and is mainly limited by the production available from BYD.")
Note:
(a) The report also says, "BYD’s E6, the only electric car that a Chinese
automaker has put into production so far, retails for 299,800 renminbi, or $
47,000, before subsidies."
(b) BYD e6 started appearing in May 2010as red-and-white taxi in Shenzhen,
owned by Shenzhen Pengcheng Electric Taxi Co Ltd 鹏程纯电动汽车出租公司, a
joint venture of BYD and Shenzhen Bus Group Co Ltd 深圳市巴士集团股份有限公

Drawbacks: "Charging stations are few and far between, repair shops are hard
to find and the cars are costly. Even after generous government support,
the Shenzhen e-taxi costs 80 percent more than the Volkswagen Santana that
ordinarily cruises the streets of Shenzhen.
"The [Pengcheng taxi] company is still sitting on a big loss that [its
general manager] Du blames on hefty upfront investments, insufficient
charging spots and the limited distance that an EV can travel per charge.
