BRIGHTON -- A car heading northbound against southbound traffic on U.S. 23
struck an SUV in a collision
that took four lives and left five other people with “significant injuries
” today in the Brighton area, a fire
official said.
The expressway was shut down for more than three hours while emergency crews
worked at the scene of
the accident, about two miles southeast of Brighton between Lee and Silver
Lake roads, Deputy Chief Kevin
Gentry of the Green Oak Township Fire Department said.
Gentry said Green Oak Township firefighters, police and Livingston County
EMS personnel were dispatched
to a report of a head-on collision at about 3:29 p.m. A Toyota Prius
carrying four people had crossed the
expressway median and collided with a southbound Chevrolet Blazer carrying
five people, Gentry said.
Three people were out of their vehicles when emergency crews arrived at the
scene, Gentry said, and
rescuers had to use heavy equipment to free six other motorists from the
wreckage.
Gentry said three people were dead at the scene and six others had “
significant injuries” and were taken to
the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor via Survival Flight
helicopters and EMS ambulances.
One of the six died at the hospital, Gentry said.
Further details were unavailable today as investigators from the Green Oak
Township Police Department and
the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department were looking into the crash. The
identities of people involved in
the accident were not released.
Police are expected to release more details Monday.
Personnel from the Brighton Area Fire Department and Northfield Township
Fire Department also responded
to the accident scene. |

Blazer:
no seat belts for front passsagers, two grandparent, they should be dead,
because 5 were confirmed dead. 3 grandchildren were at rear seat, believed
to be ok. not sure if they were wearing seat belts. |

GREEN OAK TWP. — Three Ingham County teenagers were among five people
killed in a car accident on U.S. 23 south of Brighton on Sunday afternoon
that also left four people, including three children, seriously injured.
Green Oak Township police would not confirm the names of the five people who
were killed Sunday night but did release their hometowns. The fatalities
included a 19-year-old Okemos woman and an 18-year-old Williamston woman who
were pronounced dead at the scene and an 18-year-old Okemos man who died
during surgery at the University of Michigan Hospital.
All three were riding in a 2002 Toyota Prius driven by a fourth Ingham
County teen, who was listed in critical condition Sunday night, according to
Green Oak police.
The accident happened about 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Green Oak Township, about 30
miles west-northwest of Detroit, when the northbound Prius crossed the
median and hit a southbound Chevrolet Blazer with five people inside.
The driver of the Blazer – a 62-year-old Ohio woman – and a 56-year-old
male passenger were killed on impact, according to police. Three children,
ages 10, 5 and 3, were riding in the backseat and were seriously injured.
They were taken to University of Michigan Hospital.
Police said the two people killed in the Blazer were not wearing seatbelts.
The accident forced the closure of both sides of U.S. 23 for roughly four
hours Sunday. |
