早在亚利桑那于1863年变成美国领地之前，就有中国人在这里谋生了。1860年亚利桑那
领地人口普查中，发现第一位华人，他名叫威廉· 程(William Tsching或Tching的译
音)，生于1834年（清道光十四年），时年26岁，住在尤马(Yuma)，是科罗&#
8203;拉多河一艘轮船上的厨师。1860年亚利桑那领地人口普查中就发现第一位华人：
他姓程（Tsching或Tching的译音 )，英文名字是William。他生于1834年（清道光十四
年），时年26岁，住在尤马(Yuma)地区，在科罗拉多河一艘轮船上当厨
师。十年后的1870年，有21位华人在亚利桑那领地当矿工、厨师、洗衣工。当时白人的
注意力集中在对付墨西哥人和印第安人这两个大族群上，由于中国人数很少，尽管要对
付种族歧视，但是没有发生白人用暴利驱逐或通过立法来排斥中国人。而当时暴力排华
浪潮席卷了美国中西部如加州，怀俄明州，内华达州，科罗拉多州和蒙塔纳州。
1869年5月太平洋铁路竣工后，当年11月，亚利桑那的Prescott报纸就出现了这样一条
消息：“MORECHINAMEN-Three more Chinamen arrived during this week, and had
gone to work.There are four of them which is quite enough.” 面对歧视，中国
人开起了杂货店，洗衣店和庙，这些都集中在Goodwin和Grinite 这两条街道上。有个
叫George 阿发Ah Fat的中国人在亚利桑那矿工日报上刊登了自己洗衣店的广告。1868
年6月13号的报导说有中国人被Wickenberg附近的秃鹰矿业公司雇佣。当天的矿工报说
那里的活基本就靠20来个中国人干。
中国人是这样都涌到Big Bugwards去的： 有个中国人觉得在那里找到一个好矿了，派
人告诉Prescott的中国人。于是他们马上出发：“我不想再洗衣做饭了，我想马上去，
有中国人告诉我找到好多黄金。”社论接着说：现在我要告诉你，中国人，你们要进入
森林了，要当心印第安人！
中国人会在西班牙殖民者以前挖过的矿重新开发。
到了19世纪70年代后期时，南太平洋铁路决定要修一条铁路穿过亚利桑那沙漠。这给中
国人带来了机会：他们需要逃脱加州对中国人的迫害 找一个人烟稀少的地方谋生。
尽管印第安人自己不吃鱼，但是1877年当铁路工人在科罗拉多河边安营地时，Yuma地区
的印第安人高兴地把鱼卖给中国工人。中国洗衣店也从印第安人手里买木柴。
1877年春天，南太平洋铁路修过了加州到了科罗拉多河边， 亚利桑那哨兵报说：星期
一那天，一群中国人在河边汉龙渡轮那里干活。这一个礼拜，干活的人越来越多，有好
多马匹马车送到他们那里。中国人的主要营地离汉龙河有一英里，在加州边界线那边。
报酬和中央太平洋铁路不相上下。11月3号亚利桑那哨兵报说：“249名中国人乘着6个
车厢来的，星期四，8个车厢运来了300多中国人。昨天又来了21个中国人。”
1880年3月20号南太平洋铁路修到了Tuscon，亚利桑那中国人主要就是这么来的。1880
年人口统计，亚利桑那有1630个中国人，其中1153在Pima County，159在Tuscon。Pima
County的1153中国人里，850名是铁路工人。 |

有的华人买了后挣到了钱。

In 1941, Wong and his brother John Kai were able to purchase a state land
lease for 320 acres of "raw river bottom land" from local rancher Don Pedro
Aguirre for what was at the time the absurdly high price of $500.
"I was there when my father finally broke down and sold that land to the
Wongs and Kais," 90-year Yginio "Gene" Aguirre, Don Pedro's son, said in an
interview last month. "He didn't want to sell that land at all so he kept
upping the price. Finally after about the third time they asked for the land
, he told them they were crazy and went ahead and sold."
From those hard-gained and overpriced sections of bottom land, Wong would go
on to amass more than 10,000 acres of deeded land and lease more than 50,
000 acres of ranch land by 1965. Large portions of that empire remain in
cultivation today under the corporate name of BKW farms.
The Wongs and Kais, with the weight of their significant land holdings
behind them, acquired significant protection of the areas water rights that
allowed the perpetuation of agriculture in the Marana region, and set up the
showdown with the city of Tucson over ground water pumping that led to
Marana's incorporation in 1977.
