It’s been a good week for the Valley.
On Wednesday, General Motors announced it will build an IT innovation center
in Chandler with a goal of hiring 1,000 people, mostly software engineers,
within five years.
The announcement came a day after USAA announced a major expansion of its
north Phoenix facility, with plans to add 1,000 workers. Those jobs will be
in finance, supporting the military-oriented company’s insurance, banking
and investment business.
That’s 2,000 well-paid jobs coming over the next few years, on top of
construction work to house the workers. It’s the right kind of momentum as
the state crawls out of the Great Recession.
“I believe it speaks volumes about how we have done such a good job here in
Arizona in regards to leading the country in so many different issues,”
Gov. Jan Brewer told The Arizona Republic’s Josh Brodesky. “We’ve had
lean and predictable regulations that they don’t find anywhere else, low
taxes, and certainly an educated workforce.”
And, in GM’s case, incentives. The Arizona Commerce Authority is putting up
$1.3 million, Chandler will pay up to $1.13 million and the state will
provide tax credits up to $14,000 for every job created.
There’s always a good debate about whether such incentives are necessary or
wise. But what matters today is that GM made its announcement in Chandler,
not far from where Intel plans to build a major research and development
center. The two announcements add to the city’s profile as a place that
values high-tech jobs, which can only help the city recruit additional
companies.
The announcement was also affirmation for Arizona State University and the
University of Arizona, which GM officials singled out as important factors
in their decision. They said they expect to hire graduates from both schools.
The news was just as positive at the other end of the Valley, where USAA
already has a major presence with 3,200 workers in 650,000 square feet of
space, the company’s largest operation outside of its Texas base.
The expansion will take it over 1 million square feet and up to 4,200
workers. The company is clearly happy with the work being done here.
Two big announcements do not mean happy times are here again. It will be up
to five years before all 2,000 jobs are filled. And 2,000 jobs, even when
filled, will barely move the unemployment rate.
But it has been months since the last big job announcement. Getting two in
two days brings a wave of optimism. We have 2,000 more reasons to be hopeful
that good times are returning. | s*******d 发帖数: 4135 | | m***8 发帖数: 7797 | 3 赞大道消息。
