发帖数: 86 | 2 To avoid duplicate work, I ONLY work on up to three cases for each specific
topic. So take good advantage of this opportunity, think really really hard,
and the most important of all, learn the skills and apply to yourself.
Why I choose this case:
1. I'm working with a smart, teachable, work-in-process CPA. Definitely need
a lot training and polish but also with above average, if not great,
potentials. I'm not a superman, training and motivation eat up a lot times
and believe it or not, the time you spend on career coaching on one specific
folk run opposite direction of the result. Top performer always know what
should do (not what to do) and just need a few hints.
2. I see all typical fixable mistakes in this case. If you see more than 3,
you get your green belt. 5-8? polished manager. 10+? experienced senior
management.
3. My goal is to help 20-30 CPAs in this board to increase their annual
salary by 20-30% within 3 years so I can add $1 million plus value to our
CPA society. The breakdown is (4% annual raise X 3 year plus 8-10% for
promotion). In my prior company, I had lead a department to get 10%+ annual
raise for consecutive years so I'm confident the goal is reachable. | m******1

I received some contacts requesting me to cover their own cases if possible.
Actually I will finish this case study in the next 5-6 weeks and I'm
confident you can learn most skills in this area. I'm more interested to
make you a fisher instead of feeding you fish.
So just follow my blog and think really hard after you read.

The case study didn't goes very well and actually a lot different to my
original scripts. The biggest surprise is the client withdraw from the case.
.....
Anyway, as I promised, I still need to complete this case.
Below is the complete case study for this client. No matter what's your
opinion on this, I have to say I'm not satisfied at all. I will definitely
rank the whole work as one the worst project in my entire career.

Brief Description of the client:
我的背景是这样的：美国一般学校读了2年会计，硕士毕业。进了4大做了auditing3年
，累得撑不住了辞职，在华人小公司做半工半年，一般休养一边把CPA考完了。后来没
找到公司的
全职工作，就到了现在的local firm（大概100多人）继续做audit Senior.现在local
firm的manager还比较有经验（都工作了6-10年），所以这半年也学到一些东西，比如
怎么做
financial啊（以前在4大都是客户做好的）。可是audit就是audit呀，每天程序和以前
4大也
差不多。现在的地方客户规模就50M。一直做顺利的话大概2-3年升manager.
我的迷茫是这样的：我应该安心在这里做，做到manager后再找公司的Accounting
manager职位，还是现在马上找senior accountant的工作。现在走，应该能找到中型，
运气
好的话大一点的公司。但是去了里面不知道sr. accountant要做多久才能积累到可以做
manager的经验。现在不走，过两年，是不是多半只能去小公司做Accounting manager
吧。

received based on my questions:
谢谢你选我的例子作case study.以下是我的答案。
1. Ultimate Career Goal:
在一家稳定成长的中小型private公司做财务方面的管理层.离家近,上班flexible无加
班，年薪10-15万+bonus。
2. What's your marketable strength and potential strength?
marketable strength：3-4年审计经验（distribution, retail, manufacturing,
entertainment industries).CPA.中文和其他小语种。Excel（pivot table,
vlookup),easygoing.
potential strength:同时handle不同的项目，time management, people skill。
这些以前在4大也有做，但是在现在的firm作的更密集，这些方面的能力会得到更多的
提高。
3. How to reach to your career goal. No answer.
Brief Comments:
I have read the above emails at least 10 times in the past month (you
can't count any recruiter or hiring managers to do the same thing) to
ensure I'm not missing anything. However, the only conclusion I can
draw is this is a bag of mixed messages from a confused work staff
with horrible planning.
Working 3 years for big four in most case means a lifetime decent
accounting jobs, provided you don't screw it up dramatically/repeated.
To stay in a decent career track, you have to prove: strong technical
background, solid skills (personal and managerial)and most importantly
proven record of progressive career advancement.
Proven record of progressive career advancement means:
1. stay in specific accounting fields and get specialized: One
dimension is by function: G/L, A/R, Financial Reporting/System,
Internal Audit, Tax, FP&A, Audit. Another dimension is by company
size: less than $100 million company normally don't have job more than
150K (even CFO can't make that), $200M-1B pays a little bit better but
have a lot room for career growth (of course you have to earn it by
work and networking hard). $2B+ companies normally pays best, hard to
get in and less chance of growth. Third dimension is whether the
company is a public company or private company. Public company
normally pay a 5%-10% premium than private company. The rational is
obvious, the skills and requirement in public companies is a lot
higher than equal size private companies.
2. proven record of career advancement. You have to prove your title
getting higher and compensation increased over your career. Also by
working in a higher skilled position. Financial reporting, FPA, Tax is
definitely higher than G/L, Internal Audit and AR position.
Considered the big mass in the lady's resume, it requires
significantly career upgrades and career planning to back to the
career track should be. Since she don't want to spend her time (me
neither don't want to invest my time on this case any more) to
continue this career refining process, let's just point three possible
career tracks for the lady to work on.
1. join second tier CPA firms like Grant Thornton, BDO and top 20 U.S
firms. I really can't see work for less than 50 million clients will
help you on networking or to join some $300 million+ companies.
2. Join some mid-size companies and work really hard to build a
winning package.
3. However, the best solution is to rejoin big 4 until you find a
decent corporate accounting job.
Anyway, it requires big efforts to get in a winning track but only an
impulse to screw it up. If you want to turn things around, you have to
double your efforts and maybe even more. No short cut.
I'm sorry if my opinion might hurt you. But it's an honest one but
very close to the fact. Like it or not, accept it for your own well being!
