上周三学校half day，我准备中午接了儿子后，吃完饭让他先睡1个小时，然后给他上
两个小时的writing强化班！
一开始准备的教材是：
（1）半个小时的lecture: what does good writing look like.
(2) 半个小时的Exercise: write a paragraph on.....
(3) 半个小时的feedback and coaching
(4) 半个小时的revision |

儿子说：If it moves towards the direction you want it to go?

后的收尾工作，我重点做了以下几项：
回到这番努力的初衷：儿子写作的主要症结是久久写不出来。那他写不出来是因为什么
呢？通过这次对话，我觉得儿子写不出来的主要原因是对老师提的topic可能并不是很
感兴趣，或者不熟悉。 而这个问题是不可避免的， 老师才不会像我这样做铺垫，顺着
他的思路给topic呢。
那怎么办呢？我就抛出了我准备好的重点之一：audience. 明确告诉儿子说：不管写什
么，都可以有audience, 都可以给audience提供些什么， 所以无论拿到什么topic, 先
锁定一个audience, 就象要对着这个人说话一样，把自己想说的东西写下啦。儿子是个
还算比较social的人。我像这样对他讲，他容易理解和操作。
提前准备好的writing ABC的B是说， english writing就是八股文，每段话都是一个意
思说三遍：topic sentence, body, closing 都是说的同一件事情。 儿子的问题是卡

然的那一类文学。
在英文里，第一本Nature Writing的书一般认为是Henry David Thoreau的Walden。一
百多年来，现在Nature Writing已经是一个作品很丰富的类别了。其他我喜欢的作品有
：John Muir的My first summer in the Sierra,Edward Abbey的Desert Solitaire,
Joseph Wood Krutch的The forgotten peninsula,Robert Finch的Common Ground,还有
Rachael Carson 的大海三部曲。
相比之下，中文中有“游记”，但这些游记一般是描写人文、历史，而更多的是作者个
人的感受。很多作者的自然知识都很肤浅，就知道“小鸟在林中歌唱”、“山上参天的
树木”和“动物吃植物了”之类（我有点夸张），根本就说不出个所以然。
而这些我提到的英文作者，都是功底很深的Naturalist（自然学家、博物学家），对动

是针对近、现代文学来说（我自己没讲清楚，这算是我的错；“采菊南山下”的例子是
我用来引申追朔中国人对自然的心态）。
本草之类，没读过，但觉得应该算是Techinical Journal之类。我讲的，当然是带文学
性的作品。水经注，只读过很小的片断，但觉得还是有文学性，应该可以算作Nature
Writing。
除了这些古文之外，比如说，我们将时间的框架缩小一点：近一百年来，中文里有真正
的Nature Writing么？
既然是带文学性的作品，当然不会没有作者的感受、观点。我的主要意思在于，我提到
的这些书里面，它们对自然现象、生物习性、地质结构等的描写都非常细腻而且准确（
是否用了拉丁文当然也并不是评判的依据）。比如说回到Walden上来，Thoreau的主旨
是说，人生中所必需的其实比一般人想象的要少得多，其实很多人一年忙到头只不过是
舍本逐末。然后，第一章，他列了很多数据，无非是说，看，我就是买几块木板、一些

if i write sprintf("%d"), just find the 1st digit, then keep on going.
for %f, i break into 2 parts, say 3.14
1. print 3,
2. for 0.14, i found it has 2 digits after the 0.
so *100, make it 14, then print 14

but those are byte data, not double.

Subsequent event：at the end of year xx, a major customer filed for
bankruptcy.
我的理解是应该直接write-off AR，Adjusting entry should be:
Dr: Allowance for doubtful accounts; Cr: AR。
因为既然是需要做adjusting的subsequent events, 那就表明这个客户没法支付AR的可
能在BS date已经存在了，那时就应该已经计提了Allowance for doubtful accounts.
所以等真正破产时，就应该直接write-off这个客户的AR。
但是Wiley给的adjusting entry is:
Dr: Operating Expense; Cr: Allowance for doubtful accounts.
这个是计提坏帐准备的分录，而不是直接write-off。

平时写paper描述实验过程的时候主要用被动态.比如xxx was measured by xxx, xxx was fabricated in xxx. 但是我看一些法律写作的书籍说legal writing用主动态比较 好. 可是这样一来writing sample里描述实验过程的话就会用很多"We 怎么怎么样"的 句式,感觉挺奇怪的.请问这样是正常的吗?这些技术上的描述用主动态好还是被动态好? 谢谢! |

the point of the test is to assess your ability to explain complicated
technical matters using simple and accurate language. just make sure people
outside your field can understand what you write. don't be too technical.
they probably won't ask you to write anything about patent law. |

uncheck. 但里面很多数据全没了. 还非常非常慢,打开一个folder要半天才
显示文件列表.
